Body As Form

Visual artist Nick Cave, an Alvin-Ailey trained dancer, creates performances and sculptural installations populated by his “Soundsuits”, which are meticulously handcrafted from found objects and recycled materials. His phantasmagoric creations operate as both sculptural objects as well as ritual costume when worn on the body. They operate on multiple levels exploring notions of craft through his inventive manipulation of materials, as well as form and behavior in the look and feel of the Soundsuits as they move, and through these forms are revealed multiple layers of meaning tied to cross cultural references to ritual dance and narratives touching on race, mythology and grounded in the sublime joy of dance.
